About Rajib Nandy

Rajib Nandy is a teacher, researcher, analytical journalist, and media trainer whose work explores the intersections of journalism, media, political communication, and the rapidly evolving digital society. Over the years, he has remained actively engaged in teaching, research, writing, and public discourse, with a particular interest in understanding how media shapes democratic life and civic engagement.

He is currently an Associate Professor (on study leave) in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Since 2012, he has been involved in teaching and research at the university level, specialising in journalism, mass communication, new media, and digital communication. He is also pursuing a PhD as a Doctoral Scholar at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Jadavpur University, one of India's leading academic institutions.

Rajib Nandy earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Communication and Journalism from the University of Chittagong. In 2010, he pursued advanced studies in Media Studies at the School of Education and Communication at Jönköping University, Sweden. This international academic experience has enriched his perspectives on research, teaching, and media analysis.

Before entering academia, he worked for nearly four years as a professional journalist at two of Bangladesh's leading national newspapers, Samakal and Kaler Kantho. In 2011, he was among the youngest members involved in the planning and launch initiative of Jagaran, a newspaper edited by the legendary editor Abed Khan. His enduring curiosity about media, politics, and society later became the intellectual foundation of his academic journey.

His research interests include political communication, media and democracy, new media, digital journalism, technology and diversity in newspaper design, new media and mobile journalism, the prevalence of mob violence in Bangladesh's social and political landscape, and the relationship between media and politics. His work has been published in several national and international academic journals.

Beyond the classroom, he has conducted nearly fifty workshops across Bangladesh and India. A collaborative research paper on India–Bangladesh border conflicts was presented at an international seminar held at Lund University in Sweden. He has also delivered workshops, presented research papers, and given invited lectures on journalism, new media, digital storytelling, and political communication at universities across Delhi, West Bengal, Agartala, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, and Rajasthan.

Alongside his academic work, he remains actively involved in independent journalism, analytical writing, and media consultancy. He regularly publishes columns, opinion pieces, and contemporary analyses in national newspapers in Bangladesh and India, and has successfully completed several consultancy projects for media organisations in Bangladesh.

At the heart of his work is a commitment to fostering critical thinking, promoting responsible media practices, and strengthening a culture of democratic communication. Through his multiple roles as an educator, researcher, journalist, and media trainer, he seeks to build meaningful connections between knowledge, the public sphere, and civic dialogue.

Beyond his professional life, he is an avid reader, a collector of books and rare newspapers, a cinema enthusiast, and an enthusiastic traveller. Born and raised in Chattogram, Bangladesh, he is married and the father of a daughter.

Outside Bangladesh, Kolkata is the city he feels most deeply connected to—a place that holds a special significance in his memory, cultural imagination, and emotional landscape. His ongoing journey through teaching, journalism, research, and intellectual exploration continues to shape both his work and his identity.
